“I’ve tried, successfully I think, so hard to right my wrongs and live the life of a good, caring compassionate and empathetic person. But I guess I just have too much bad karma in the bank or something. I don’t know anymore. I do keep praying Elizebeth, sometimes I pray so hard, but nobody is answering. Maybe it’s possible that some people just aren’t redeemable.” My father in law was convinced that he had cancer because of karma. It seems karma is such a commonplace word that it isn’t questioned anymore. If you do something wrong, karma will pay you back for what you’ve done. If you do enough right, then karma will reward you for your good deeds. Something bad has happened to you, so it must mean you did something in your past that makes you deserve it right? Wrong. I’m here to tell you, karma is a lie.
Is karma really true?
I remember way back in elementary school seeing yin-yang symbols and thinking they were so cool. Someone told me they were about balance. I don’t remember the first time I heard the word karma, seems like I heard it so much it just became a regular occurrence. And it seems so easy to believe, probably because it seems easy enough to master. Who wouldn’t want to believe that if you do enough good that you’ll be “repaid” with good? I see a lot of people striving to do this. Karma has become a motivation for good deeds in their lives.
But if karma is true, that must mean that there is something in the universe keeping checks and balances on all our actions right? And what in the universe decides how you’ll be repaid for your deeds? The more I think about it, it seems like a lot of work. When I look up the definition of karma, I see there isn’t a clear definition of it. Different religions have taken what they want to make of karma and made up their own definition. In America, I draw a conclusion that our deeds will define what life gives us. Right? If we do something wrong, wrong will come, if we do something right, right will come.
But I have too many questions. What gets to decide these outcomes? Who says, if you stole some candy in fifth grade that you’ll be repaid for that “bad deed” fifteen years later by getting your car stolen? Or that because you give five million dollars to a charity that you’ll be repaid with more riches? Who? What? The universe? That’s a whole lot of information to be stored by some imaginary database in the sky.
[Tweet “Karma is a whole lot of information to be stored by some imaginary database in the sky.”]
Why is karma a lie?
If you’re willing to believe that the “universe” somehow keeps checks and balances of your good and bad deeds, why is it so hard to believe that there is a God who does that? That’s what I question. Karma seems so undisputed. Why is it so easy to believe?
Do you really want to know?
Let me explain this how I explain a lot of these easily believed rationalizations of life- in short-story form.
Say you create an amazing product and want to start a business. It’s a product no one else has ever come up with, and you tell your best friend about it. But your bff is jealous and quickly becomes your worst enemy because they wanted the business for themselves. But they can’t have it. So, they tell everyone they know about your idea. And other people quickly start their own businesses with your same idea. However, none of those products perform as good as yours because they are missing a key component. But they still market the product. People everywhere hear about it, and they start buying it from all your competitors. You’re like a needle in a haystack. Your new enemy has muddied the waters so much that it is hard to find the real, true authentic product.
This is the idea of karma. And all other religions for that matter. They sound “about right”. Most of them make sense. They seem applicable, and they give temporary satisfaction to the need and longing you’ve felt your whole life. But they are all empty, worthless products in comparison to the original. They may do the job for a while, but they’ll eventually break because they are faulty in one way or another. There are so many different types of “keys to life” that it’s hard to find the only key that actually works.
So if karma isn’t real, what is?
Well, I am so glad you asked. The good news is, there actually is Someone who keeps track of everything we do. Yup that’s right, everything. It all gets written down in books. (Revelation 20:12) All the bad stuff that we do. All of it. But thank Jesus (literally) that all of it can be erased. You see, it’s our nature to do bad things. And if I had to pay for all the bad stuff I did, it would be much worse than what karma could throw at me.
The bible calls the bad stuff we do sin. And sin is anything that is done against God. Anything that offends Him. He’s perfect, so I’m not going to sugar coat anything here, and I’ll just tell you that a lot offends Him. You’ve offended Him, and so have I. I have sins piled up miles high from when I’ve told lies, gossiped, cursed, cheated on math tests, smoked weed, had premarital sex. Yup, all of that.
But God loves us so much that He has made a way to forgive all sins -yours and mine. So much so that He can’t see them anymore. He sent His Son Jesus Christ to live on earth and die for our sins. All of them. Past, present and future. Lies, murder, abortion, theft, drugs -any and everything you can think of. You see, karma says that our bad deeds will be repaid basically by more bad deeds done to us. God says that without receiving His gift to us, our sins are paid for in death and eternal separation from Him in a place called hell. What’s so amazing about this, is that Jesus conquered death for us. He not only died, paying the penalty for our sins, He also rose three days later effectively conquering death.
All we have to do is accept what He did for us. It’s like having a package that you have to pick up at the post office. It belongs to you, but if you never receive it, then it’s not really yours right? God leaves the decision in our hands. He’s not going to force us to love Him, just like we aren’t forced to love anyone else. But He loves you. More than you could ever understand. He showed His love for you by sacrificing His only Son so that He can spend forever with you.
If I say karma isn’t real, why should you believe me when I say that God is?
Can you look at a time in your life and say with 100 percent certainty that karma caused a good or bad reaction in your life? It’s speculation. We can’t prove karma. It’s an idea.
On the other hand, we can for sure prove that God is real. That Jesus Christ lived on Earth is historical fact. Even though lies have been told for centuries that He was just a profit or just a man, when you look at history and the testimony of people who actually lived at the time He lived, it has also been proven that He died on the cross and rose from the dead. And was seen by plenty of witnesses.
There are plenty of instances where people have sought out to disprove this fact. Because if Jesus didn’t raise from the dead, then our faith would be in vain. But you can’t walk away from investigating Jesus without knowing that He is alive. You have to choose to not believe in Him. A great example is in the book [easyazon_link identifier=”0310345863″ locale=”US” nw=”y” tag=”beautyofselah-20″]The Case for Christ[/easyazon_link]. A journalist’s wife believed in God so he set out on a journey to disprove that He is God, using his journalistic capabilities. But he ended up giving His life to Jesus because you cannot disprove a fact.
So what now?
Still a skeptic? I challenge you to seek the truth. I would check out [easyazon_link identifier=”0310345863″ locale=”US” nw=”y” tag=”beautyofselah-20″]The Case for Christ[/easyazon_link]. Or just pray. Ask God if He is real to reveal Himself to you. Look around you. Do you think this all happened by chance? Science is amazing and I love it, but science still cannot prove how we got here. We can guess and hypothesize all we want, but there is a logical answer. We were created.
Do you want a personal relationship with Jesus? Because I know He wants one with you, otherwise, He wouldn’t have died for you. As I mentioned earlier, we are all sinners. Romans 3:23 says that “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”. No matter how much we try to do good, it can never pay for the sins we’ve committed against God. “Now to him who works the wages are not counted as grace but as debt, but to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly his faith is accounted for righteousness.” Romans 4:4-5 Only Christ’s sacrifice can do that. In spite of our sin the bible says “But God demonstrates His own love for us that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8.
God, in His grace freely gives eternal life to every person who receives forgiveness for their sins through Jesus Christ. “For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Do you want to receive salvation?
Romans 10:9-10 says “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.”
Please pray and ask for forgiveness for your sins. Here is a prayer of salvation. “Jesus, I know that I am a sinner in need of a savior. Please forgive me of my sins. I believe that You died on the cross to save me from my sins. I now ask You to be Lord of my life, and I promise to commit my life to You.”
Did you pray and believe this? The bible says the angels are rejoicing in heaven right now over your salvation! Please find a church to go to. Jesus is a friend, talk and pray to Him. Although karma presents itself as a logical idea. It’s just that- an idea, not based on fact or any type of proof. It has deceived most of us. The universe isn’t keeping track of our good and bad deeds. But God is. And He loves you so much that He wants you to have a personal relationship with Him. Don’t believe me? Ask God to prove it.
